International Women’s Day

BIG & BOISTEROUS GREETINGS ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!!

For those of you reading this as subscribers to my website, you can see that I’m breaking my promise of “no more than one email a week”.

Not sorry.

International Women’s Day only happens once a year and I couldn’t let this one go by uncelebrated. With the likes of MTG, LB & KL, declaring themselves “women in charge”, I feel a strong need to point out that was not who Keb’ Mo’ and Roseanne Cash had in mind when they declared:

The time has come
We’ve got to turn this world around
Call the mothers
Call the daughters
We need the sisters of mercy now
She’ll be a hero
Not a fool
She’s got the power
To change the rules
She’s got something
That men don’t have
She is kind and she understands

If you haven’t seen the video, here it is. Keb’ wrote the song for his mother, who died at 91, and for strong women everywhere.  That’s us, Right??

And two more things I’d like to bring to your attention. (Call this ‘shameless promotion” of my involvement with West Hills UU Fellowship if you like). But if you’re a Portland area subscriber, you might appreciate knowing about both of these.

First, from Wendy Cluse & the WHUUF Social Justice Steering Committee.

I came across this great article which comes with an offer to receive FREE (even free shipping!) the book White WomenEverything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How To Do Better. The offer is only available today, 3/8 for International Women’s Day.

I encourage you to read the article and take advantage of this really generous offer from the authors and the owners of Third Eye Books in Portland (black owned). If you do order the book, please consider either donating to their fundraiser at checkout or making a promise to pass the book on to someone else when you are finished (or both! Or donating the book to the library or to WHUUF!) I have not yet read it but have ordered one and heard great things about it.

If there’s interest, we can think about planning a discussion session on what the book brought up for us?

And last but not least, V-Day – A Celebration of Art & Activism

Saturday March 11, 4:00 – 6:00pm

WHUUF Sanctuary
A living celebration of art and activism by WHUUF women, those who hold fluid identities and those who support them. Come enjoy an afternoon of story, song, poetry and art. Refreshments provided.

What is V-DAY?
V-Day is a global activist movement to promote freedom from oppression against all women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based harm), girls and the planet. V-Day believes that when art and activism come together, they have the power to transform systems and change culture. Founded by V (formerly Eve Ensler), activist and author of The Vagina Monologues, V-Day has inspired women all over the world and raised collective consciousness about how oppression and gender intersect. V-Day is a movement and an example of how the power of art can be used as a liberating tool for transformational holistic education and social justice.

That’s all I have for now, Sister Rascals. Happy International Women’s Day! And if you can, please join us this Sunday at 4pm PDT for our online conversation about the women who have helped us become who we are today.

Take really good care of yourself. Stay strong. Stay safe. And Stay Well!
