… and then
we pull up our Big Kid underpants, keep our eyes wide open and Get to Work. Nobody said it would be easy and it won’t be. But it will be what we make it … together.
After reviewing my New Year post from January 2024, I decided it was definitely worthy of a second look. So here you go. What more can I say one year later except what I just said last week about remembering who we are and being real together.
So, while she won’t be this year’s Inaugural Poet (I was so hoping she would be), Amanda Gorman said all that needs saying at the DNC this summer. I pull it up when I need a reminder about the audacity of our hope and the dare to not just dream the American Dream, but to be worthy of it … I pull it up especially when I need a reminder to do everything I can to make sure it is available to those who come after me.
And when the days become (almost) too dark and Amanda’s reminder about who we are is not enough … perhaps this by Doctor Ysaye Barnwell (some of you will remember her from “Sweet Honey in the Rock”).
Let’s visit again soon …
Love, Sulima
Beautiful and powerful reminders Sulima, thank you for sending this. Filled me up!
Thank YOU, dear Judy. I love it that you’re a steady reader and I’m glad to see your occasional comments on ECM’s Resistance Live as well.
Thanks for reminding us who we are, Sulima. I enjoy your posts.
Here’s a poem from my friend Martin’s “Daily Sightings” message today that I think you’ll appreciate.
Small Steps
by Elena Mikhalkova
My grandmother once gave me a tip:
In difficult times, you move forward in small steps.
Do what you have to do, but little by little.
Don’t think about the future, or what may happen tomorrow.
Wash the dishes.
Remove the dust.
Write a letter.
Make a soup.
You see?
You are advancing step by step.
Take a step and stop.
Rest a little.
Praise yourself.
Take another step.
Then another.
You won’t notice, but your steps will grow more and more.
And the time will come when you can think about the future without crying.
oh yes, Cindy! Thank you so much for sharing this one. It’s definitely a keeper.
