But We’re Not Quite There Yet

Post-BookLaunch & Pre-Holiday Greetings …  again, Wednesday’s Words have become Thursday’s Thoughts.  Time seems to be moving at a very rapid pace these days. True for you too, I’ll bet, so much so that you might think this is a good week to skip my little missive entirely. I hope you won’t. There are a couple of things I really want to share, and maybe you need a little break.  I know I do.

These days we walk a fine line. We know that very soon the light will be returning … but we’re not quite there yet. There will be candle lighting and feasting and family gatherings and churches everywhere will open their doors in celebration of the rebirth of Hope … but we’re not quite there yet. We struggle to balance our joy with our grief, our spontaneity with our caution, our awe with our cynicism. We are so tired of hangin’ out in the dangle.

The poet Maggie Smith makes a good point when in her poem, “How Dark the Beginning”, she says …   we talk so much of light, please let me speak on behalf of the good dark. Let us talk more of how dark the beginning of a day is.

So we go on, eyes wide open, arms outstretched.  We dance. We stumble. We fall. We dance again.

Here are the main things I wanted to share with you this week.

First, All In The Soup Together … Four Seasons of Recipes & Reflections had its unveiling last weekend and I can hardly begin to express my gratitude for the incredible support and abundant praise the book is receiving.  Inspired in part by the “Group Soup” tradition at my church, it seemed fitting that the book be launched there, with those in attendance, not just listening to me read a bit, but sharing soup and conversation together.  You can see here (thanks to Steph Bairey & her trusty camera) some of how it went.

In a recent article in CNN.com, I was reminded about how lucky I am to be part of community of soup lovers who also appreciate poetry, gentle humor, and being all in the soup together.

Second, an invitation from my friend, Rhonda Dorsett, (who had the great honor of filming the Winter Solstice with Paul Winter at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City for 12 years)  to virtually attend this year’s Winter Solstice Concert 2022. The ‘reveal’ happens on December 21st, but the link will allow you to watch it (perhaps repeatedly?) at your leisure.  Rhonda knows that attending this concert is one of the few things on my “bucket list” and now I will be doing it. Thank you, Dear Heart, for sharing it with us all.

Hope to see (many of) you for Russian Christmas on January 8th. In the meantime, stay well, travel safe, and Love Much!
